Two Projects Started within the Scope of TÜBİTAK Earthquake Special Call

In the first project, reinforced concrete column tests and building-scale structural analyzes will be carried out to determine the acceptable damage criteria for the "Repairable Damage" situation and to determine the earthquake performances after repairing structural members that are damaged at different levels. In the other project, the soil-structure interaction will be examined on liquefied soils, and its kinematic and inertial effects will be investigated.

"Strengthening the Environmental Inspection Capacity of the Marmara Sea Basin Project" Started

In order to solve the mucilage problem and to control pollution in the Sea of Marmara, an effective and basin-specific environmental control system should be established and implemented in accordance with the recently stated action plan. In this respect, “Strengthening the Environmental Inspection Capacity of the Marmara Sea Basin Project” was launched in October 2021 by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change of TR in order to increase the effectiveness of environmental inspection practices carried out and to determine the measures to be taken in order to ensure unity in practice in the "Marmara Sea Hydrological Basin", which constitutes the sub-basins of the Marmara and the Susurluk River Basins that discharge into the Marmara Sea.

Lateral Load Resistance-Deflection of Piles Under Earthquake Excitation is Investigated in ITU Structural and Earthquake Engineering Laboratory

The purpose of this project, in which the shaking table in the Structural and Earthquake Engineering Laboratory of our faculty is used, is to develop soil-pile resistance-deflection (p-y) relation especially for group piles in sands under seismic waves propagating through the soil from the bedrock. Unlike the current studies in the literature, the effect of nonlinear dynamic behavior of the soil during seismic waves propagating from the bedrock toward the surface on the p-y curves will be investigated and the p-y relationships will be developed for piles in a group (without the group effect) instead of using the p-y relations for single piles.

National Satellite GÖKTÜRK is Used in Bathymetry Modeling of Horseshoe Island

In this study supported by TUBITAK, an 'Experimental' Satellite-based Bathymetry Model will be constructed for the Horseshoe Island shallow waters. Within the scope of the performance analysis, comparative tests will be carried out with the Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 satellite datasets, whose resolution has been increased through Generative Adversarial Networks', and the satellite data obtained with the national satellite Göktürk.

Monitoring Climate Changes in the Antarctic Region with Navigation Satellite Systems

In recent years, advanced remote sensing technologies based on space geodetic techniques has become an effective supporting tool for monitoring global climate change by important parameters such as atmospheric water vapor, sea, ice and snow levels. In this context, GNSS Meteorology and GNSS Reflectometry techniques evolved based on satellite navigation signals are widely used for monitoring the Earth's surface and atmosphere characteristics. The main purpose of the project is observing meteorological and physical parameters such as water vapor in the atmosphere and ice/sea level changes in the Horseshoe Island, Antarctica to contribute climate change monitoring.

Glaciers in Antarctic Continent are Monitored and Modeled with UAVs

The Antarctic Continent is a very important region for observing climate change and its evolution over time. The studies investigate the climate change prove that with the melting of the glaciers and the rise of the water, which is formed by the disruption of the radiation balance of atmosphere, more than 1 billion people will be affected by this situation in the near future. Therefore, long-term monitoring of glaciers is very important for the analysis of climate change impacts. For this purpose, the melting of glaciers and the topographic structure will be observed by comprehensive data collection methods including UAV 3D laser scanning, UAV Photogrammetry and UHA GPR technologies within the scope of the international project (Project No: 121N033) supported within the scope of bilateral cooperation between TUBITAK and BAS (Bulgarian Academy of Sciences).

Historical Minarets in Bursa are Protected Against Earthquake

Historical mosques are very important part of the architectural heritage in our country. Bursa, which was the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, has also many historical mosques. Considering the high seismicity level of our country, it is clear that a significant proportion of these structures are constantly facing earthquake hazards. Therefore, in this Project, the fragility curves of the historical minarets are obtained to estimate the damage risk under a possible earthquake. Moreover, applicable intervention methods respecting conservation principles are studied to improve the structural performance of the minarets.

A Mucilage Tracking System is Established for the Sea of Marmara Using Satellite Technologies

Within the scope of the project, the Marmara Sea will be examined within the natural basin boundary, using high-resolution satellite images downloaded at the time of mucilage and freely accessible satellite images under the ITU UHUZAM. For this purpose, the natural basin boundary for the Marmara Sea will be delineated with an interdisciplinary team. In parallel with the land cover/land use (LC/LU) change in the determined basin in the study, the land-sea interaction will be examined, mucilage-covered areas will be determined from satellite images and the relationship and spread of these areas will be examined with bathymetry and current directions. Thus, a feasible monitoring and control infrastructure model (mechanism) will be developed when a possible future mucilage threat will be experienced.
